How They Work

Net metering is the means of measuring the difference between the electricity generated by a customer connected to Duquesne Light’s system and the electricity provided to the customer by Duquesne Light. A bi-directional meter is used to measure and record the flow of electricity in both directions. The electricity generated by the customer’s alternative energy generating system (such as solar panels or wind turbine), offsets part or all the customer’s kilowatt-hour usage. Through net metering, the customer will receive a credit for the electricity they send Duquesne Light in excess of the power Duquesne Light sends to the customer during a monthly billing cycle. There is no limit to how much generation Duquesne Light will purchase once a system has been installed and all interconnection requirements have been met. What Assistance Is Available for Me?

After a customer notifies Duquesne Light of their intent to install a renewable energy generating system, Duquesne Light will install a net meter at no cost to the customer. For additional information, contact the Interconnection Department via e-mail at interconnection@duqlight.com.

What Products Are Eligible?

There are many different types of “qualified, renewable energy generating systems,” including but not limited to solar panels (also called photovoltaic or PV systems) and wind turbines, that Duquesne Light customers can install. The only limitation is that the nameplate capacity of the customer’s renewable energy generating system cannot be greater than 50 kilowatts.
